Neurosurgery News & Updates

February 12, 2015

Here are a few updates on the latest knowledge in neuroscience from the Journal of Neurosurgery. Arming yourself with some of the background knowledge about the cutting edge techniques in neurosurgery and some of the latest neurosurgery studies and news will help you to find a neurosurgeon who is equipped to perform help you heal and recover in the best way possible based on your individual condition.

A team of doctors from the University of California, San Francisco, examined the relationship between the number of brain tumor patients a doctor or hospital treats and the outcomes for their patients. They found that surgeons or hospitals with a large number of brain tumor patients had considerably better outcomes in terms of reduced in-hospital mortality, higher discharge proportion, and fewer complications associated with treatment. Patients at high-volume hospitals or with high-volume surgeons also experienced fewer pulmonary complications and infections. The study did not examine the reason why surgeons or hospitals who treat more brain tumor patients have greater success rates, but it makes sense that treating a large number of patients would help a doctor or hospital develop expertise in this type of neurosurgery.

A group of doctors from the UK examined survival times of patients with a malignant type of cancer called glioma, and they examined whether there was a difference in survival times depending on whether the surgeon involved was a neurosurgeon or other specialist. They found a measurable difference in the survival times, and the patients who were treated by neurosurgery specialists with more specific knowledge of their particular problem had a longer survival time.

A team from the Department of Neurological Surgery at the University of California, San Francisco, used advanced technology to study the parts of the brain that are active when we are speaking and using language. They found that the actual sound of language is processed in one brain system called the dorsal pathway, while the meaning of the language is processed through another system called a ventral pathway. This information is helpful to neurosurgeons as it helps them to diagnose brain problems and develop safe and effective treatments.

The best experts in neurosurgery stay up to date on the latest advances in neurosurgery, and Dr. Shaad Bidiwala prides himself on consistently researching and studying the newest information in the field of neurosurgery.
