DALLAS, TX – When the new surgical hospital facility gracing the corner at 2727 E. Lemmon Avenue opens to its first patient visits on January 17, the transition of Mary Shiels Hospital to Baylor Medical Center at Uptown will be complete. The hospital is equipped with advanced technology for performing specialty surgical procedures, imaging services, and emergency care. For 47 years, the Mary Shiels Hospital occupied its former location adjacent to Central Expressway. In 2003, a joint venture involving affiliates of Baylor Health Care System and United Surgical Partners International and local physicians purchased Mary Shiels Hospital from the Shiels family. The facility continued to operate under the Mary Shiels Hospital name during construction of the 63,000-square-foot, three-story replacement facility. In anticipation of its move to the new facility, the name of the hospital was changed to Baylor Medical Center at Uptown this past summer. Baylor Medical Center at Uptown is designed to provide a welcoming environment for patients in a modern facility that is equipped for surgeons to perform a broad range of inpatient and outpatient procedures in the specialty areas of ear/nose/throat, general, gynecology, orthopedic, pain management, plastic, and spine surgery. “We anticipate that through our total commitment to quality care, innovative services and specialization, Baylor Medical Center at Uptown will become one of the leading surgical hospitals in North Texas,” says Matt Chance, CEO of Baylor Medical Center at Uptown. The new facility features 24 inpatient beds including four higher acuity beds with full telemetry monitoring, six operating suites, one procedure room, a four-room emergency department, physician consultation rooms, and an imaging suite equipped with digital X-ray, CT scanner, and MRI. Amenities to enhance the patient and family experience include convenient access and parking, wireless Internet access, flat screen monitors in patient rooms, and overnight accommodations for family members. Additionally, the facility is expected to be the first LEED certified hospital in the DFW Metroplex. LEED Certification, awarded by the U.S. Green Building Council, creates design and construction standards to encourage development of efficient, innovative, and sustainable buildings. The designation encourages strategies aimed at improving energy savings, water efficiency, emissions reduction, indoor environmental quality, and stewardship of resources.
